Infographic Redesign

September 13th, 2020

I used Adobe InDesign to redesign an infographic I found that provides information about statistics on Honeybees. I completed this project for my Information Design 1 course that I took at KSU. For this project, I analyzed this design in a memo that describes choices I made for fonts, layout, and user's needs. Design is an iterative process and I edited this document several times based on peer critiques to achieve the final product.

While redesigning this infographic, I focused on its purpose, audience, and context. Its purpose is to provide information and statistics about Honeybees in the United States and its audience includes Americans that are interested in environmental issues, specifically those interesed in the loss of Honeybees. As the United States has grown to be a largely industrialized country, the use of pesticides has negatively affected honeybees and many other species. U.S citizens have realized how important honeybees are to the environment, and they have begun researching more about the issue and how to prevent it. To meet users’ needs more effectively, I redesigned the infographic to better serve its purpose, audience, and context.

I made changes to this infographic's title, fonts, layout, alignment, and color model. See Original Document. I changed the title from “Bee Informed” to “Honeybee Statistics in the United States” so that the audience would immediately understand the infographics purpose, simply by reading the title. I reorganized the layout of separate text sections for easier readability. I placed the section about context directly under the title. The original red color of the images and text was harsh on the eyes, so I chose to use a monochromatic yellow color model. I also used black for the text and a brown for accent colors. I used these colors because this infographic is about honeybees and they are black and yellow. I changed the background to a solid color to increase figure-ground contrast.
